Police: PC Woman Tried to Run After Taking Tequila

Police say Melba Morris tried to avoid arrest and hid the bottle of Milagro tequila outside of a nearby grocery store.

A Port Chester woman tried to shake a store employee who caught her stealing a $60 bottle of tequila on Halloween night, according to police.

Melba Morris, 55, walked into at 9 p.m. on Monday. An employee at the 124 Midland Ave. store watched Morris as she picked up a bottle of Milagro tequila, placed it in a bag, and casually covered the bag with her coat.

Morris left the store and headed into nearby Pathmark, with the liquor store employee following her. Realizing the employee was behind her, Morris walked out of the grocery store and tried to hail a cab, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

That's when the liquor store employee flagged down a passing police officer. Police found the discarded tequila bottle hidden outside of the grocery store and arrested Morris.

Morris, of Bush Avenue, was charged with misdemeanor petty larceny.
