Police: Man Stole Power Washer, Fenced It Next Door

Police say the suspect wasn't particularly ambitious, selling the stolen power washer at a 90 percent discount to a man who worked down the block.

A Port Chester man faces a felony charge after allegedly stealing a power washer from one Port Chester business and selling it to another shop a block away.

Officers were called to Artic Mechanical at 28 Bulkley Ave. on the morning of Dec. 1. The owner told them someone had broken into his shop -- and he had surveillance footage of the crime, Lt. James Ladeairous aid.

Police watched the security camera footage, which showed a man walking through an open bay door and picking up a commercial-grade power washer. Detective Aaron Conetta recognized the man as 34-year-old Alexis Rivera of Port Chester.

Detectives visited Rivera's Broad Street home. They were greeted by Rivera's mother, who told police her son was upstairs sleeping. Detectives took Rivera outside for a talk and asked him if he stole the power washer.

"The first words out of his mouth were, 'What if I get the power washer back for you?'" Ladeairous said.

Police arrested Rivera, who told them he sold the $700 power washer to 60-year-old Eduardo Sanchez. Sanchez works a block away at Reinna Groceries on Poningo Street.

Rivera was charged with third-degree burglary, a felony. As for Sanchez, police said he should have known a 90 percent discount was too good to be true. Sanchez was charged with fifth-degree possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor.
