Police: Man Breaks Into 2 Cars in Port Chester, Security Video Leads to Arrest

Village police officer recognizes man in video, finds him nearby.

A White Plains man arrested last week on a theft charge is now accused of breaking into two cars at an auto repair business in Port Chester, according to Port Chester Police.

Demetrius Williams, 52, of 25 Cleveland St., White Plains, was arrested Monday morning after a Port Chester police officer viewed a security video from Westchester Auto Body, 331 Midland Ave., and recognized the man who could be seen smashing the windows on two cars parked outside the shop.

Village Police Officer John Bykowski spotted Williams a short time later on Sand Street and charged him in connection with the incident at Westchester Auto Body. He is accused of second-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and petty larceny.

Police said more than $2,500 worth of damage was done to two cars and a bag worth $325 was stolen from one of the cars.

Police said that a man could be seen on the shop's security video smashing car windows and crawling inside the cars. During the investigation, police said blood was found in one of the cars.

When Williams was arrested, police said, he had blood on his clothing and broken auto glass was found in one of his pockets.

Williams was also arrested about 6 p.m. last Thursday after workers at the Port Chester Stop and Shop supermarket filed a shoplifting complaint. Police said the store's staff saw Williams attempt to put a frying pan in his pants, but put it back when it did not fit.

However, police said store staff saw Williams put 15 steak knives in his pants and then go to leave the store without paying for the items. He was charged with petty larceny in that incident.

Williams faces a hearing on Port Chester Village Court on the new charges.
