Police: Hundreds of Soccer Fans Took to Streets Following Mexico Victory
Police closed Westchester Avenue for about an hour following Mexico's 4-2 victory over the U.S. national team.
Westchester Avenue was closed for the better part of an hour when hundreds of jubilant soccer fans spilled out from local bars and restaurants following Mexico's victory over the U.S. national soccer team Saturday.
Police estimate more than 350 soccer fans gathered at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Pearl Street a few minutes before 11 p.m., after the final whistle sounded in the Gold Cup match between the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico supporters took the celebration outside following the 4-2 victory.
Patrol officers closed Westchester Avenue between Poningo and Pearl streets until 11:45 p.m. to allow time for the crowds to clear. The elated soccer enthusiasts were cooperative and dispersed without incident, Lt. James Ladeairous said.
