Police: Greenwich Man's Blood Alcohol Was 3 Times Legal Limit

The man was charged with aggravated DWI, an 'enhanced penalty' count that could mean higher fines and a lengthier license suspension. Earlier, a Port Chester man was arrested for DWI on Waterfront Place.

A Greenwich man was arrested Sunday for driving while intoxicated after police found him asleep at the wheel on North Main Street.

A passerby saw Jose Claro Barrera Lopez snoring behind the wheel of his black Lincoln Continental, parked at the intersection with the motor running, Capt. John Telesca said. The passerby called police, and when an officer arrived, he found the 57-year-old slumped inside, with heavy condensation on the windows.

The officer opened the car door, took the keys out of the ignition and woke Lopez. Police say the Greenwich man had glassy eyes and slurred his speech; he braced himself against the car door frame, staggered out, and failed a field sobriety test, Telesca said.

Lopez registered a .25 blood alcohol level, more than three times the legal limit. He was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, as well as aggravated driving while intoxicated.

The second charge is similar to "enhanced penalty" DWI charges in other states -- in New York, suspects who have a .18 or higher blood alcohol concentration can be charged with aggravated DWI. They're subject to harsher penalties if convicted, including a higher fine and a minimum one-year license revocation.

'You'll' Be Coming With Me: Port Chester Man Almost Twice Legal Limit

A Port Chester man telegraphed his state of inebriation to police on Saturday after treating a double yellow line like an obstacle course.

Port Chester police say an officer spotted 38-year-old Damacio Yool driving back and forth over the double-yellow line on Waterfront Place at 1:44 a.m. The officer watched as Yool came to a dead stop in the middle of the street, then started accelerating slowly.

Yool stumbled when an officer stopped his Chevy Blazer and ordered him out, and failed a field sobriety test, according to police. Yool registered a blood alcohol concentration of .17, more than twice the legal limit of .08. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
