Police: Flavored Ice Vendor Tried to Make Quick Getaway

Maria Carchi, 31, tried to avoid a violation-level ticket and ended up with a misdemeanor charge instead after allegedly defying police orders.

A Queens woman was arrested Sunday afternoon after trying to evade a minor ticket from police.

Maria Carchi, 31, was wheeling a push-cart filled with lemon ice near Don Bosco Place when a nearby restaurant owner called police, complaining that Carchi did not have a permit.

When an officer drove by, Carchi tried to cross the street. The officer noticed Carchi was accompanied by a man driving a van with more lemon ice inside, Capt. John Telesca said. The officer told Carchi and her partner to stay put, then made a u-turn to park his patrol car.

In the meantime, Carchi and the unidentified man tried to shove the cart into the van and make a quick getaway. When they couldn't get the cart in the van in time, the man took off on foot, leaving Carchi, her cart and the van on the street as the officer made his way back.

Carchi told police she doesn't know the name of the person who owns the van, but a records check came back to an owner in Jamaica, Queens. The van was impounded by police.

Carchi would have been issued a violation-level appearance ticket for the initial offense, but earned a second-degree obstructing governmental administration charge by trying to get away from the officer instead of waiting as she was instructed. The charge is a misdemeanor.
