Tune in at 5 p.m. every weekday to WPIX Channel 11 to catch up on the best and brightest Patch stories from throughout the tri-state area. Tonight, watch for news on this morning's fire on Irving Avenue in Port Chester, where a building containing a market and several apartments was destroyed.
The roof of the commercial side of 160 Irving Ave. collopsed in the 1 a.m. fire, in which 100 firefighters from Port Chester and neighboring fire departments battle smoke and flames until about 5 a.m. The American Red Cross provided assistance for eight people from two families which were left homeless because of the fire.
The fire is believed to be accidental, starting in the ceiling of the market.
After the fire, Port Chester police took residents of the building back in so they could collect some of their belongings. The Red Cross provided the families with funds for emergency housing, food and clothing.
