Passports, Jewelry Stolen in William St. Burglary

A strongbox went missing from a William Street apartment after the family who lived there took an overnight trip to Boston.

Police are investigating a break-in at a William Street apartment after a strongbox containing passports, resident alien cards and jewelry went missing over the weekend.

The victim, a 36-year-old woman, told police she took her kids with her on an overnight trip to Boston, leaving on Friday afternoon and returning on Saturday. When she returned to her apartment at 11:30 a.m., she found the front door wide open, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Police believe the burglar entered the apartment by breaking a locked window and left through the front door, leaving it open.

The victim told police she'd had problems with a man last summer, and the man was deported after receiving criminal charges from an earlier incident. She told officers the man was rumored to be back in Port Chester, and admitted she did not report a crime a week ago in which her car was broken into and keyed from front to back. Police are investigating the possibility that the same man could have been responsible for the incidents.

Anyone with information on the burglary can call the Port Chester Police Department at 914-939-1000. All calls will be kept confidential.
