New Rochelle Police Investigate Murder-Suicide

Police say a man shot a woman in downtown New Rochelle, then turned the gun on himself.

New Rochelle Police said a man shot a woman near the intersection of Huguenot Street and Memorial Highway Wednesday morning, then turned the gun on himself.

No names were immediately available, but police said the woman is still alive, but in critical condition. She was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center.

A downtown business owner heard gunshots this morning around 8 a.m. near the Avalon on the Sound apartments and looked out to see a man and a woman lying in blood.

Sean Salazar, owner of Beanberry's Cafe and Yogurt Bar, said he heard the shots coming from the area near Huguenot Street and Memorial Highway.

After the two shots, he looked out and saw the man laying on top of the woman with blood all around them, he said.

He came back into the cafe and locked the doors — only letting in customers whom he knew.

"I didn't want whoever did it to come in and try to hide."
