Think your car is safe sitting unlocked in your driveway?
Police said thieves are targeting unlocked cars in Port Chester and Rye Brook, taking whatever they can grab out of the vehicles — ranging from cash to GPS units. Numerous thefts from cars were reported over the Labor Day holiday weekend and police are urging residents to protect themselves by simply locking the doors of their vehicles.
Port Chester Police Lt. James Ladeairous said the thieves appear to be bypassing locked cars — not bothering to break into them, going instead for easy to enter unlocked cars.
Ladeairous said the thefts have taken place in neighborhoods throughout Port Chester and Rye Brook. He noted that the thieves don't care if a car is parked closed to a home in a driveway. If it's unlocked, the thieves are jumping into the cars.
