Lawn Ornament Thieves Target 'Fashionable Lions'

Four stone lions have gone missing from Port Chester lawns in the past several weeks.

Police are looking for lawn ornament thieves with very specific tastes.

On Sunday night, police received a report -- the fourth in three weeks -- of a stolen lion lawn ornament. The resident of a N. Regent Street home told officers a thief or thieves had made off with a "white, fashionable lion, lying down with his paw on a ball," valued at about $100.

The report follows a similar incident on Leicester Street on March 29, when a homeowner reported three concrete lions had been stolen from the lawn over the past week, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Police believe the disappearing lions are the work of local kids, possibly participating in a scavenger hunt. Residents are encouraged to safeguard their stone lion lawn ornaments in the meantime.
