Iona Saddened At The Loss of Michael Haynes

Men’s Basketball Recruit Shot and Killed in Native Chicago

  • The following statement was submitted by Iona College.

Michael Haynes, a 6-7 forward from Chicago, IL who signed with the Iona College men’s basketball program for the 2012-13 season, was shot and killed on Thursday evening. He was 22 years old.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Haynes was shot dead while trying to break up a fight over a stolen necklace near his home.  Police said he was shot in the wrist, chest and lower back about 5:10 pm in the 11600 block of South Vincennes Avenue. Acquaintances dropped him off at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, where he was declared dead about 6:25 pm, the newspaper added.

“The Iona family is devastated with the news on Michael’s passing,” said head coach Tim Cluess. “His passion, energy and excitement for his opportunity this year makes this tragedy even more upsetting. Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Nicknamed “Big Mike”, Haynes graduated from Fenger Academy in Chicago, IL and was coming to New Rochelle from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds last season for Indian Hills. His coach, Barret Peery, described Haynes to SNY.tv as a strong, powerful athlete around the rim who ran the floor well and defended multiple positions.

"The Iona Community is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Michael Haynes,” said Iona College President, Dr. Joseph E. Nyre. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael and his family."

There is no fish stinking over here my flag waving friend. Chicago has the WORST gun control laws because they do not work!! Clear as the day is long! But take a look across the pond at our wonderful neighbors and host to the 2012 Olympics: In London, England, the bobbys don't carry guns! And guess what? They have the lowest statistics in gun violence for any country in the EU today. They don't have "the right to bear arms" as a constitutional right in merry old England. Because it's not a right - it's a dangerous health HAZARD!

What's really sad is his potential will never be realized and his family will probably never see justice. Young people had better wake up ! You are killing killing off your own people race instead of building it up

Have you ever been there? I think NOT otherwise you'd know that when things hit the "fan" over there they call out the military to deal with it. Oh by the way; they do have some very heavily armed & well trained police to deal with situations. I understand your passion but please don't write about information that you're speculating on because you lose your credibility doing that.

Why is it that here in town bxville Eastchester we don't have drive by shooting? oh that's right we have people who obey the law and respect fellow citizens.. Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation. A law is just a bunch of words to criminals. It won't physically protect but make one feel safer. Well folks it doesn't work. There have been 37 homicides in one month in Chicago. Disarming those who wouldnt be incline to commit crime only excites criminals to assault the disarmed in society who don't commit crimes. Liberals love 1- 4-5-6 amendments but hate the 2nd. Right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed.
