Update: Electrical Fire Torches Mamaroneck Home

Update: Over 60 firefighters were at 520 Oakhurst Rd. this morning battling what was classified by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team as an electrical fire, said Village of Mamaroneck Fire Chief Chris Syzmanowski.

"We pulled up and had smoke showing...we stretched a line and put the fire out quickly," he said about the fire, which originated in the basement of the home.

The homeowners called 911 when they heard smoke detectors going off and smelled smoke in the basement early this morning.  Parts of the first floor were effected by the fire, said Syzmanowski. 

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours. Luckily, they were able to rescue the homeowners' cat; there were no injuries.

Residents living near Mamaroneck's waterfront woke up to the sound of blazing alarms and the smell of smoke Friday morning as firefighters rushed to douse a basement fire at an Oakhurst Road home.

Mamaroneck firefighters were dispatched to the home, at 520 Oakhurst Rd., at 5:53 a.m. and worked quickly to contain the fire. Within 10 minutes, the fire was brought under control, with fire crews easing back and no smoke visible.

No one was injured in the fire.

Paramedics waited on standby while firefighters vented the two-story home, which is in a neighborhood across the water from Mamaroneck's Harbor Island Park.

Neighbor Will Hallock heard the commotion and headed outside.

"I woke up and saw the light show," he said, referring to the dozens of emergency vehicles parked along the narrow street.

Hallock was standing next to neighbor Dorothy Leicht a few minutes after 6 a.m., watching firefighters secure the scene after bringing the blaze under control.

"I saw all the lights, and I thought it was the garbagemen coming," Leicht said.
"And then I saw one truck after another coming, and I knew something was up. So I just got dressed and came out."

A preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have been caused by an electrical malfuncton. Check back with Patch for more details.
