Burglars Steal Safe Containing $100k From Port Chester Office

Burglars stole a safe containing $100,000 from a Main Street development company.

Burglars made off with a small fortune after stealing a safe from a Port Chester development company over the weekend, according to police.

A sharp-eyed employee called the owner of Great American Development after he was driving by the 507 N. Main St. office a few minutes after 1 p.m. on Sunday. The employee noticed one of the company's work vans parked in the lot next to the office, which he said was unusual because the vans are parked indoors and were garaged when the owners locked up on Saturday afternoon, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

The employee called the company's owner, who drove down to check on the office. When they entered the front door of the building, they noticed the alarm system panel had been ripped off the wall. In the rear of the building, a ladder was balanced against the wall, leading to an upstairs window.

Missing from the office was a safe which contained $100,000, Ladeairous said. The owner told police employees had gone home a few minutes after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

No one from the company was able to say how one of the work vans ended up in the nearby parking lot. Police are holding off on saying whether they believe it was an inside job.
