240 Pounds of Shrimp Stolen from PC Seafood Wholesaler Overnight

Thursday's break-in was the second time a burglar stole thousands of dollars worth of seafood from the South Regent Street wholesaler.

A burglar made off with 240 pounds of shrimp after breaking into a freezer at a Port Chester seafood wholesaler Thursday, Port Chester police said.

Detectives headed to Elaine's Seafood at 150 S. Regent St., after employees called police headquarters early Thursday afternoon to report the break-in.

The freezer is located outside behind the building, and the burglar broke through locks to get at the seafood inside.

In all, 10 cases of shrimp were stolen. Each case is 24 lbs. and the combined wholesale worth of the shrimp was more than $1,600, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

It's the second time a burglar has gone to lengths to steal large amounts of seafood from the business, which has operated in Port Chester for 55 years, according to former owner Peter Moran. Moran has since passed the business down to his daughter, but still works at the Regent Street wholesaler.

On March 5 of 2010, employees called police and told them they'd returned to work to find the freezer open, with one case of octopus and 12 cases of squid missing. The seafood was worth $1,375.

Staff at the wholesaler are taking no more chances. Moran said employees have "double secured" the freezer with additional locks in the hopes of foiling another break-in attempt.

Anyone with information on the thefts can call the Port Chester Police Department at 914-939-1000. All calls will be kept confidential.
