To The Editor:
After the Civil War we began a tradition. In the Spring of the year we would decorate the graves of our war dead with flowers.
This came to be known as Decoration Day. In the 1950s we renamed the commemoration Memorial Day. Now, it seems to have become a holiday to celebrate the beginning of Summer.
It’s funny, celebrating Summer on a day that is to remember those who never saw the full Spring of their lives. Perhaps we can best honor those who didn’t come back by caring for those who did.
