Blogs: Cold Dogs and 'Thank You' Notes

Despite the dubious ravings of apocalypse gadflies and modern-day Mayans, the world continues spinning after the New Year.

And as the calendar shifts to 2013 (but you continue to write 2012 on checks in error), Patch blogger Betsy Case offers some sound advice.

"As this calendar turns, what layer of yourself can you leave behind... fear, anger, discontentment, lethargy?" she asks.

Also: blogger Claire LaBrunerie explores the concept of gratitude at the start of a new year—and laments the lost art of saying "Thank You."

"Whether in the process of applying to a school, interviewing for a new position, or day-to-day business development and relationship management, consider sending the occasional note of gratitude using a pen and paper," LaBrunerie urges. "It’s a powerful thing."

And now something for the dog lovers—the Putnam SPCA has released information on leaving your canine outside in the gelid weather. Remember: your pet must be breed appropriate if it's going to brave the cold, and should have adequate shelter.

Lastly, somewhat uplifting news for those struggling in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy—lawmakers are continuing to tour the devastated coastal areas that so desperately need aid. Read more here.
