Port Chester Library Board Member Dr. Samuel N. Acerbo dies at age 84

Retired chemistry, science instructor taught at Iona College for 52 years.

Dr. Samuel N. Acerbo, 84, a lifelong resident of Port Chester who taught at Iona College in New Rochelle for 52 years and was very active in the Port Chester community died Tuesday, March 26, 2013. He was 84.

He was a member of the Port Chester Public Library Board of Trustees, was Past Commander of the Port Chester American Legion, a member and past-president of the Port Chester Historical Society, a Grand Marshall of the Columbus Day Committee, served 4th of July Committee, Knights of Columbus, retired district leader of the Republican Club, the Westchester Trails Association and the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Acerbo was born Jan. 19, 1929 in Port Chester to the late Zopito and Ginevra Passarelli Acerbo. He graduated from Port Chester High School in 1947 and received his degree from Iona College and received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Fordham University.

Dr. Acerbo was known as a passionate teacher of chemistry and general science at Iona College on its main campus on North Avenue for 52 years. He retired Jan. 1, 2010.

He served in the Army from 1950 to 1952 in Europe.

He was a devoted parishioner of the Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester and was also a member of the Holy Name Society. He traveled throughout the world and enjoyed mountain climbing and hiking.

Dr. Acerbo is survived by his son, Dr. Alvin S. Acerbo of Port Chester, a sister, Mary Acerbo of Port Chester, and brother, Anthony Acerbo of Greenwich, CT., and Margaret Bosma of the Netherlands and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Anna and brother Rocco.

Calling are set for 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday April 1, 2013, at Craft Memorial Home, 40 Leicester St., Port Chester. A Mass of Christian Burial is set for be 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Corpus Christi Church, 136 S. Regent St., Port Chester. Interment is to follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye.

Memorial donations in memory of Dr. Acerbo may be made to the Corpus Christi Church, 136 S. Regent St. Port Chester, NY 10573.
