Obituary: Grace Aune, Former United Hospital Nurse

The 93-year-old Pleasantville woman was born in North Tarrytown and was active at Holy Innocents Church.

AUNE, GRACE BERTHA (nee Hogan) Grace Aune, aged 93, of Pleasantville, New York, passed away on March 10, 2013, at Northern Westchester Hospital surrounded by her loving family. 

Grace was born on August 19, 1919, in North Tarrytown, NY, to the late Daniel and Anne (English) Hogan She graduated from St. Teresa’s Elementary School in 1932, and North Tarrytown High School in 1936. In 1939, she also became a graduate of the Cochran School of Nursing in Yonkers, NY.

Grace was married for 59 years to her beloved husband, Kenneth R. Aune, who predeceased her in 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Karen, and her grandson, Kenneth, of Kingston, NY, her daughter, Margaret, of Peekskill, NY, her sons Kenneth of Pleasantville, NY, Richard of Tampa, FL, and Mark, his wife Annemarie, and her grandsons, Richard Joseph (RJ), and Tyler of Somers, NY. She is also survived by her sister, Mary (Hogan) Higgins, of Fort Mill, SC, and many nieces and nephews. 

Grace was predeceased by her brothers Francis, Patrick, Daniel, John, Richard, and James Hogan, and her sisters, Ann (Hogan) Pastell, and Margaret (Hogan) Lyons.

During her early years, in addition to being a devoted mother and homemaker, Grace enjoyed working as a Registered Nurse at United Hospital in Port Chester, NY. A dedicated professional, she cared deeply for her patients, and especially enjoyed her work as a Delivery Room nurse. She was also an active member of the Altar Society and Mothers’ Club at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Port Chester.

Upon moving to Pleasantville, NY, Grace continued her volunteer activities at Holy Innocents Parish, where she enjoyed teaching CCD, being a member of the Social Concerns Committee, and working as a Substance Abuse Minister. A devout Catholic, Grace had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother, the Sacred Heart, and Saint Therese of the Little Flower. She was also deeply inspired by the works of Padre Pio and Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.

Grace enjoyed sewing, knitting, working in her garden, volunteering, and spending time at the seashore. But, her greatest loves were her children and her grandchildren. Wherever they were, is where she wanted to be. Grace cherished the time she spent with her family, and enjoyed many happy get-togethers and vacations with them.

Grace was a beautiful, gentle soul with a kind and caring spirit who enjoyed helping others. She was the epitome of the word Grace itself, and she touched the lives of all who knew her with her laughter, love, and quiet elegance.

She will be deeply missed…

Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday, March 13, at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Holy Innocents Church in Pleasantville, followed by interment at All Souls Cemetery in Pleasantville, NY.
