Anne R. Cook, Former Rye Resident, Dies at Age 80

She was a longtime volunteer for the Port Chester-Rye Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Former Rye resident Anne Rahman Cook, known to all as "a swell gal," departed this life on May 9, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was 80.
In February, her family moved her to spend her last months under the care of Hospice of The Carolina Foothills at her home in Landrum, SC.
A life-long resident of Rye, she was born to Muriel (Garland) and James S. Rahman on May 28, 1932. She attended the Village of Rye Elementary School, graduated from Rye High School, and obtained her secretarial certificate at Katherine Gibbs in New York City.
She married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth L. Cook on March 17, 1951. She worked at Martin Insurance Co. in Rye until starting her family in 1952. In 1964, she and Ken started a successful small business, Westchester-Wilbert Vault Co., which became the largest company of its type in Westchester County when it was sold in 1999.
Anne volunteered much of her time to Port Chester-Rye Volunteer Ambulance Corps, where she served for many years as an EMT alongside her husband, who served as a driver. While serving many individuals in their community, they were both first responders to the Stouffer's Hotel fire in White Plains.
A perpetual student, her talents and skills exceeded the average in all she touched; from business to gardening, cooking, sewing, knitting and all types of needlework, to maintaining her own buildings, personally restoring her old International Scout and throwing pottery to name just some.
Anne is survived by her husband, Ken, of 62 years, three children, Michelle Richardson of Harpswell, Maine, Lynn Cross of Landrum, South Carolina and Jimmy Cook of Antrim, New Hampshire, one granddaughter; seven grandsons and five great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the Port Chester-Rye Volunteer Ambulance Corp, 417 Ellendale Avenue, Port Chester, NY 10573 or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
