Carver Center Breaks Ground on New Playground (VIDEO)

They are redesigning the area so that the back of the building has a clear entrance.

Digging a shovel into the ground, Carver Center staff and board members celebrated the start of a much-needed project, a new playground in the back of their Westchester Avenue building in Port Chester on Friday afternoon.

“We have overseen a lot of projects but I am most excited about this one because it changes the whole dynamic of the entrance, makes it safer for kids and creates a more functional flow through the area,” said Joe Kwasniewski, Chief Operating Officer and Acting Executive Director of The Carver Center.

The project is funded through a $190,000 grant from the Lone Pine Foundation out of Greenwich, Ct., Kwasniewski said. Lone Pine has contributed many grants to the Carver Center over the last three years, but this is their biggest gift yet, he said.

The project will be done in two phases so there will only be three weeks when the children will have no playground to use, and they will still have the gym and pool open for physical activities. Kwasniewski expects the project to be completed by late October.
