LWV of New Castle Seeks Interested Students to Apply to Attend 13th Annual Students Inside Albany Conference

The LWV of New Castle is seeking a high school student to attend the 13th annual Students Inside Albany conference.

Are you a high school student with a strong interest in government or politics? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.  The League of Women Voters of New Castle (LWVNC) is looking to sponsor a high school student to attend the 13th annual Students Inside Albany conference to be held from April 14 to April 17, 2013 in Albany.  This student conference, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc., is designed to increase students’ awareness of their responsibility in a representative government and provide the tools necessary for meeting that responsibility.  This interactive conference will bring together high school students from across the state to learn about New York State government and the process by which citizens can participate in the policy-making arena.  As part of the program, students will also tour the Capitol and observe the Senate and Assembly in action by spending an afternoon shadowing their legislators.

Last year LWVNC sent Horace Greeley High School student Tim Bloom to the Students Inside Albany Conference.  Tim found attending the conference to be a very worthwhile experience and highly recommends the program to fellow students:

The Students Inside Albany was an amazing experience that I wish more students had a chance to participate in. If more students involved in government had a chance to see what a real government looks like in action, they might become more effective leaders. The combination of learning about my state legislature, connecting with my representatives, and sharing ideas with other students from around the state is a great way to prepare our generation to exercise our rights to choose our elected officials as soon as we turn 18. It might even motivate some to consider running for elected office.

This year’s LWVNC attendee will be selected to join other students sponsored by the over 50 local League of Women Voters chapters throughout New York State.  Attendance is free: the LWVNC will provide train fare for the student to travel to Albany; all other costs of attending the conference, including three nights’ accommodations at the Hotel Albany in downtown Albany, will be covered by the League of Women Voters of New York.  All applicants will receive a student membership in the LWVNC and the winner will be invited to share their Conference experience with League members.

For more information or to obtain a copy of the application, visit the LWVNC website, www.lwvnewcastle.org.  You may also contact Lea Barth, barthpetrillo@gmail.com, with any questions.  Applications are due by January 7, 2013.
