Awesome Halloween Mummy Heads for Kids to Make

Article by author Laura Hill Timpanaro

These super easy mummy heads make a great party centerpiece or Halloween decoration for your mantle.  My kids love to make them because they are so easy and can be dressed up to look spooky or cute.

I've listed the materials we used below and some substitutes.  I think the best crafts use things found in the house or yard, so be adventurous and use what you've got!

Styrofoam or cardboard spheres, we also used cleaned rocks!  They worked great and made lumpy, bumpy mummies.  Black tape or duct tape to make the space behind the eyes.  Medical gauze (cheesecloth or cut strips of fabric) for the wrap, glue and water.  Googly eyes.

This is so easy!

First put the piece of duct tape where you want the eyes to go.  You'll cover almost all of this when you wrap your mummy head.  Make a paste of glue and water mixing it until it is the consistency of milk.  Cut a strip of medical gauze, dip it in the glue mixture then use you fingers to wrap it around your mummy head. Keep wrapping and forming the head until it’s completely covered except for the space you've left for the eyes. Wrinkles in the gauze make it look really mummy-like.  Add one strip of gauze to the middle of the eye space and build up the brow area to give your mummy personality.  Glue on your eyes, let dry and your done.

We put our mummy heads on the windowsill.  If you are working with foam forms you could use a knitting needle to pass a string through one or several to make a garland of mummy heads.
