Community to Gather in Honor of Gabrielle Acevedo

The third annual "Walk for Gabby" event will raise money for a scholarship fund in Acevedo's name.

Friends and family will gather on June 15 to help provide a bright future to a young Port Chester student while they honor another who was lost too soon. The third annual “Walk for Gabby,” event is in honor of Port Chester native Gabrielle Acevedo who died in a tragic car crash in 2010. The event raises money for a scholarship fund in her name, set up to help support a local student studying communication disorders or special education. Last year’s event raised $6,500. This year two Port Chester High School graduating seniors received scholarships from the Gabrielle Acevedo Fund.

Acevedo was a role model in the Port Chester community. She graduated from PCHS in 2007. During high school, she worked as a counselor and lifeguard at the PC Recreation Department Day camp, was a peer leader and a member of the Anthony Foust Mentoring Program while a high school student. In college she was a member of Partners for Learning at Nazareth College.

She was majoring in Speech Pathology with a minor in Spanish at Nazareth when she died tragically in a head-on car crash on Jan. 22, 2011. Friends and family remember her for her spirit and commitment to the community.

Loved ones continue to remember and honor Gabby regularly on the R.I.P. Gabrielle Acevedo page on Facebook.

The Walk for Gabby will be held June 15 at Port Chester High School. Registration is at 9 a.m., opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. Rain Date is June 16. There will be raffles offering opportunities to win gift baskets, gift cards, t-shirts, book bags, bracelets and more.  Make donation checks out to The Gabrielle Acevedo Scholarship Fund. The event is sponsored by Anthony Foust.
