The Tea Bowl and Ceremony at Clay Art Center

The Tea Bowl and Ceremony: Keiko Ashida

ALL LEVELS

4 weeks:

Sunday, February 9, 16, 23, 1pm–4pm & Saturday, March 1, 1-4 pm

Fee: $150 members; $170 non-members

During this special hands-on class, students will be immersed in the Japanese tea ceremony: a set of rituals, tools, gestures, etc. used in Japanese tea culture. Tea ceremonies can be found worldwide, although are centered on Asia and Europe, including the Victorian-era 'high tea' or afternoon tea ritual, where the ritual of being seen to have the right equipment, manners, and social circle, was just as important as the drink itself.

Students will create traditional Japanese tea-bowls in three days and on the fourth day, take part in a traditional tea-ceremony during the Tea Immersion event, demonstrating the use of their objects in a ceremony of their own.

Keiko Ashida will lead the group through the making, carving, glazing and using of the objects made in this special topics class
