The Great Escape: Hop in the Cockpit of U.S. History Aboard the Intrepid

Walk the decks of New York City's Intrepid Sea and Space Museum for an experience rich in history.

Since 1982, eight years after it was decommissioned, the Intrepid has been a fixture on the Manhattan skyline.

Kids will stare in awe at the sheer size of the Essex-class aircraft carrier, which was launched in 1943 and survived several major engagements in World War II's Pacific Theatre. And chances are, parents and chaperones will remember walking its decks in their younger days.

So get a double dose of history on a weekend day trip by imagining what it was like to be a sailor at the Marshall Islands and Okinawa. Exhibits include iconic aircraft like the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F-14 Tomcat, while tours that meander to the lower decks provide a close-up look at the cramped living quarters sailors endured during long missions away from home.

And exhibits on deck are that much more exciting. Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light has been a longtime favorite, while interactive activities like a ride in the A-6 Cockpit Simulator or the Virtual Flight Zone will help visitors feel like they’re flying through history.

Aspiring pilots, be prepared: a tour inside the Concorde, the world’s fastest commercial airplane, will allow you to experience what it’s like to be behind the cockpit controls.

The Intrepid also hosts the annual Fleet Week in honor of military personnel. This year's Fleet Week runs from May 25 to June 1.

The museum is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, the museum is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Click here for details.
