Panelists: How We Can Make Long Island Sound Less Dirty

The "Long Island Sound Report Card" forum is scheduled for next week in Mamaroneck.

The Long Island Sound has its share of beaches, but it doesn't exactly conjure up images of pristine sands and crystal-cear water.

Whether it's authorities warning beach-goers not to brave the waters for extended stretches during the summer, or new reports about toxic chemical traces in fish, the sound's reputation is not a good one among the beach-going public.

Earlier this month, authorities finally banned commercial and private boaters from dumping their waste into the sound -- and media reports noted they often deposited that waste not far from the swimming public. That's 12,000 fewer boats dumping sewage into the water.

Island Sound Report Card,” a forum at the Mamaroneck Library on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Local environmental leaders will join representatives from the EPA, DEC and other organizations for a series of presentations on water quality in the sound. After the presentations, audience members will have the chance to quiz panelists on the issue.
