Former U.S. Special Envoy To Discuss Middle East Turmoil

Ex-U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell featured at Greenwich Library.

Former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell, who was the U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, is set to speak on “Turmoil in the Middle East and Its Effect on American Policy” at a World Affairs Forum gathering.

The event is set for 7 p.m. on April 16 at the Greenwich (CT) Library. 

Mitchell served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from January 2009 to May 2011. Prior to that, he served in the Senate for 15 years. From 1996 to 2000, he served as the independent chairman of the Northern Ireland Peace Talks.  Under his leadership, an historic accord ending decades of conflict was agreed to by the governments of Ireland and the UK and the political parties of Northern Ireland.

In 2000 and 2001, he served as chairman of an International Fact-Finding Committee on Violence in the Middle East. Mitchell is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2008, TIME magazine named him one of the 100 most influential persons in the world.

General admission tickets for the event are $30 per person. Premium admission tickets are $65 per person and include special seating in the auditorium, as well as attendance at a reception in the Flinn Gallery at Greenwich Library with Mitchell.

Hors d’oeuvres, wine and soft drinks will be served at the reception, which will take place from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium. Advance reservations and payment required, and tickets are limited.
