Fighting Halloween Pranks: Troopers, Citizens Plan 'Pumpkin Patrol'

Safety effort design to thwart pranksters from tossing pumpkins from NYS Thruway overpasses.

New York State Police Troop T and citizen volunteers will conduct their 36th annual “Pumpkin Patrol” on Oct. 30 and 31, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.

The initiative is aimed at preventing Halloween pranks and protecting motorists along the 570-mile roadway.

Volunteers assisting Troop T will monitor Thruway overpasses and report any unusual activity to State Police or local law enforcement. Seventeen organizations from 19 counties have volunteered to participate in this year’s efforts. Troop T will also keep watch for other violations including speeding, driving while intoxicated, and aggressive driving.

These patrols are made up of members of the State Police Troop T, local citizen band radio clubs, and amateur radio operators.  Troop T, whose members patrol the Thruway exclusively, and the volunteers will be on watch Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Oct. 30 and 31.

“Dangerous pranks can quickly turn into tragedy, and these patrols help prevent this type of activity,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison. “Safety has always been our top priority. On behalf of the Thruway Authority and our motorists system wide, I thank Troop T and the volunteers for their dedication to keeping us safe on the Thruway each Halloween.”

The State Police took over the Pumpkin Patrol in 1990 as part of the State Police crime prevention effort.

“Troop T will be out in full force monitoring any unusual activity, plus patrolling roads, bridges and exits to help minimize any potential hazards to travelers,” said State Police Troop T Sgt. Thomas Ferritto. “As part of this effort, Troop T will watch for intoxicated drivers, and will be conducting seat belt checks.”

The Pumpkin Patrol was initiated as a volunteer effort in 1976 by Katherine St. Jacques in Fort Johnson, Montgomery County. St. Jacques was talking to a truck driver on her citizens band radio when the windshield of his vehicle was struck by an object thrown from an overpass.

The driver was injured by broken glass. St. Jacques and two companions decided to stand watch on the three over passes that crossed the Thruway in the Fort Johnson area.

Btw, I tried for twenty minutes to post this as a new thread ... I finally gave up because pageRead More after page did zero ... just spun me nowhere. A waste.

If Patch was meant to be both a community news source and a site for community opinions, well, theRead More new format has undermined both of those intentions. The site is unfriendly for even casual perusing and even more user-unfriendly for any sort of dialogue between readers and those who wish to make comments. It might have been a well-intentioned make-over, but it's diminished user traffic and turned folks off. Local issues used to be aired here ... and then debated and commented on by the folks most impacted by those issues. That's all been sabotaged by the new format. Better to admit your error or face the reality of less user traffic and probably less ad revenue as well.

Linda T., I would guess Mrs. Brakewood lives in Port Chester if she is running for the Port ChesterRead More Board of Ed. Even if the schools had to impose an austerity budget, your taxes would still go up. The state has more control in these matters than you think.

Linda, the per pupil expenditure in PC schools is the lowest in Westchester and Rockland countiesRead More ... by about $2,000 per student. The issue is two fold. First, our property values are not as strong as our neighbors, so our homes have a higher levy in order to fund the schools. Second, and more important, is that the reliance on property taxes slams moderate income communities like PC. We need for the state to move to an income tax to fund schools. Scream at your legislators ... not the BoE.

I am concerned there is not enough attention to detail in the BOE budget overall and Mrs. BrakewoodRead More comment about keeping taxes affordable ... where does she live ? they are out of control and in my opinion the money we pay for taxes we should have the best looking schools anywhere ... just my opinion
