Parish, Friends Mourn Father Schenck

Port Chester takes Monday to recall a community staple.

Holy Rosary Church on Don Bosco Place in Port Chester saw more folks Monday than it generally does on early weekday afternoons.

Groups of parishioners, friends and family members visited the church Monday to mourn the death of Father Stephen Schenck, who died suddenly Saturday at age 59.

Fr. Schenck was pastor since Aug. 1, 2009; he was ordained a Salesian priest on May 23, 1981. His full obituary can be read here.

Calling hours Monday allowed visitors to pay respects and say a final goodbye to Father Schenck, who lay by the altar.

Hours will continue Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m. A funeral is set for 10 a.m. at the church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Father Steve was to me a close and true example of how one should live...to do good to others and it will bring you happiness. As much as he would not be feeling well, he never complained or ever let his pain get in the way of his mission and would always share a smile. He will be remembered as a good Pastor, good man and a great example of humbleness and strength. We will miss you and your great lectures. (SKM)
