Euro-Asian Bistro: Sushi in a Suave Setting

Classic Asian dishes get a remix in this combination restaurant, bar and lounge.

With prime real estate on the ground floor of the waterfront complex and a movie theater upstairs, Euro Asian Bistro offers an inscrutable facade that doesn't really indicate what's going on inside.

What's with the lunch specials? Is it a buffet? And what exactly are hungry diners getting into when they go for "Euro-Asian"?

After running into a friend from college a week before, we decided to meet up for dinner in Port Chester this past Monday. She suggested sushi, and I began surfing on-line for options. After a few searches there was a clear favorite – The Euro Asian Bistro.

The inside of the Euro Asian Bistro is not your average Chinese restaurant. A lounge, bar, and restaurant fused together, it has two main rooms: one with wooden chairs and tables, and a more intimate area with suede chairs and a fancy bar. The entire dining area, bar included, has an elegant feel to it. Low lit and glossy brown, it looks like those chic places where leading men and women go out to dinner in the movies.

When my friend and I met up late on a Monday night, there were few diners secluded to the more posh of the two rooms. Not an unpopular place as I was told, business tends to thicken during lunch hours.

The menu covers a wide range of tastes with plenty of invention and creativity on typical Asian flavors. For appetizers try the taro duck empanada if you're up for an adventure. For more conservative eaters, stick with notable favorites such as shumai – steamed shrimp dumplings.

Classic dishes – Kung Pao Chicken, Shrimp Teriyaki, and others – are available, but for a bit more money than your favorite Chinese take-out. (Both dishes are around $15.) If you're out to try something new, a Japanese Pizza or an Asian Crab Quesadilla might suit you well.

If you came for sushi, you won't be disappointed.

I am not a sushi conessuier who has a “sushi place” and a go-to specialty role. Occasionally, I like my fish cozy in a bed of rice in its uncooked form, but my affinity starts and ends with a California role, the most un-sushi of sushi options.

My friend, on the other hand, is a frequent sushi eater. I took her lead and we agreed on two specialty rolls and one hand roll.

The presentation was upscale. The food came out on long white column dishes with the pieces of fish lined up like soldiers at attention.

Since I do not have a seasoned pallet with sushi, the Passion roll and Tuna Avocado roll both tasted like ‘typical’ sushi dishes. There are different flavors, and ingredients, but to an unseasoned eater like me, the sea creatures tasted the same.

The Paradise roll was unlike sushi combinations I had eaten in the past. Spicy lobster and banana are never two things I thought would go together, but like other odd combinations of foods it seemed to work. The only thing I did wrong was eat it in multiple bites, hence breaking up the flavors. A big no-no in sushi eating as my friend told me.

All in all, it was a great experience at a nice place. The service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and unimposing, always giving us as much time as we needed, and much needed recommendations.

If dinner does not work for you, the $9r lunch specials are a can’t miss. Thankfully I did not judge a book by its cover and gave the Euro Asian Bistro a chance. If I didn’t, I would still be searching for a sushi place in Port Chester.

The Euro Asian Bistro is located at 30 Westchester Avenue in Port Chester. Open seven days a week, until 10 pm on weekdays and Sunday, and 11 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
