Saint George in Hastings Begins Brunch Service This Weekend

There is a new occupant called Saint George at the former home of Buffet de la Gare, a restaurant known for paying homage to serious, classical French dining. Buffet de la Gare, soon after being taken over by Gwenael Goulet in 1980, rose to become one of Westchester County's most acclaimed gastronomical destinations.

Saint George has similar aspirations and is off to a smart start. Behind its menu is Chef Chris Vergara, responsible for the impressive cuisine offered at Harper's in Dobbs Ferry and Meritage in Scarsdale.

At today's brunch, I had the Croque Madames and suffice to say, I'll probably order it again on my next visit. Yes, it was that good. The quiche is light, moist and fresh; it changes weekly but is always available for brunch. For dessert, I had the house-made chocolate mousse which was delicious, another winner. Service is totally professional.

Brunch dishes include:

  • Croque Madames. An open-face, ham-and-gruyere sandwich with mornay sauce and a fried egg on top, $12
  • Eggs Benedict. Poached eggs, ham, English muffin and hollandaise sauce, $12
  • Omelette du jour, $12
  • Onion soup gratunée. Duck bouillon, confit and gruyere croutons, $12
  • Lobster roll, $18
  • Steak and eggs, $17
  • Hanger steak frites, $22
  • Quiche is always available as a brunch choice (selections change weekly)
Brunch desserts are priced at $8 and include creme brûlée, profiteroles with vanilla ice cream, chocolate mousse with whipped cream and a daily selection of sorbet flavors.

Brunch beverages

Bloody Mary's come with a speared green olive and a celery stick; they can be custom-made to order and, Steinberg said, "cost only a gentle $6."

Other beverages include absinthe, champagne drinks, draft beer, punch, cappuccino, latte, espresso and regular or decaffeinated coffee. Only French wines are served and at least ten can be ordered by the glass. Also available: orange juice, grapefruit juice and lemonade.

For patrons who like some heat in their drinks, the bartender will prepare a spicy Jalepeno Michelada—a potent combination of roasted jalepeno, mezcal, honey, lime, and crushed tomato, topped with beer, $10.

The decor is appealing. Many of Buffet de la Gare's interior elements have been retained including the tin ceiling, tile, wood flooring and mirrors. The mahogany bar believed to be about 120 years old also remains.

About 40 people can be accommodated at the tables downstairs and the bar has eight stools. If crowded, approximately 25 patrons can be seated in an upstairs room which is also available for private parties.

Parking is free on both Saturday and Sunday at the parking lot across from the Hastings-on-Hudson train station—just a short walk away. Street parking is free on Sunday by the curb alongside the restaurant but not on Saturday. Letting the meter expire on Saturday is an invitation to the meter maid to ticket your vehicle.

Brunch hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. Dinner is also served every day of the week except Monday.

The restaurant is located at 155 Southside Ave. in Hastings-on-Hudson, 914-478-1671, www.saintgeorgebistro.com
