The Hazards of Driving through Port Chester

The story of my somewhat crazy commute this morning through the streets of PC.

Every morning, as I leave my house for work, I know I can count on a few things.  I know that if I leave any later than 7:20, I will get stuck in back of a school bus on Mill Street in Byram as I make my way to I-95.  I know that I will see the same guy drinking coffee in front of Vinny's Lunch on Main St.  One day, maybe I will wave to him - just to see if he waves back.  I will, more often than not, sing along (badly I might add) to a few songs during my commute to Stamford.  I have been doing this same commute from PC to Stamford for 10 years now, and there is really nothing exciting about it.  Sometimes I think if I closed my eyes, I could still make it there no problem.  But, I won't be trying that anytime soon.  Today, my commute proved different.  Today, all the traffic gods conspired against me.  They wanted to see if I was paying attention.  So, in order of appearance, I would like to thank the people who kept me on my toes this morning:

First, to the carful of teenage-drivers-to-be taking driving lessons at 7:15 -- the purpose of driving lessons is just that - to learn to drive.  I don't believe when you turn left you are also supposed to attempt to take out the side of my car.  Good reflexes though.  You recovered quickly and got back to the correct side of the road.  Thanks!

Second, the Heineken truck making a delivery on the corner of Irving and Poningo streets.  Was it necessary to park so far into the street that it was almost impossible for cars to get by you?  I wonder, Mr. Heiney-Man in your green shorts, was I the only person to give you a dirty look?

Third, the person on North Main Street who decided to turn his blinker on, turn his blinker off repeatedly and *SLAM* on the brakes about every 20 feet, from the Westchester Ave. intersection, all the way up to the Mill St/Main St light.  Listen, mister, at 7:15 there are no pretty girls walking the streets.  There is no reason to stop every 5 seconds and look out the window.  So get a move on before I develop road rage and plow my Mommy minivan in the back of your car.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank the multi-tasker on 95-North who could text, smoke a cigarette and eat an Egg McMuffin but couldn't figure out how to stay in the middle lane without drifting over to the left hand lane where I was already driving.

It is amazing that I was able to go into work this morning and still smile!
