The Cap’s ‘Garcia’s’ to Become East Coast Dead ‘Hub’

Jerry Garcia's daughter and Capitol Theatre owner Peter Shapiro announced the new name for its lobby bar.

Holding a statue of Jerry Garcia’s hand, The Capitol Theatre’s owner Peter Shapiro announced, “This is why we brought this theatre back,” at Furthur's final performance last week.

The crowd cheered at the announcement before the band came back on, without guitarist and singer Bob Weir who had to finish their ninth and final show during a residency there.

The theatre’s new lobby bar will be called “Garcia’s” in honor of Grateful Dead’s famous front man Jerry Garcia, who died of a heart attack in 1995. Standing on stage facing a sold out theatre with two large "Jerry" projections lit up on the ceiling, Garcia's daughter Trixie first made the announcement before Furthur’s encore.

“It is a venue that Jerry loved dearly.” Trixie said; the Dead played The Cap many times in the early 70s. “This is such a beautiful place.”

“I really hope you guys bring all the love and community and good vibes up in there, share great stories and make it a great place,” she said.

“It’s so nice for us to have a hub on the East coast,” Trixie said.

She added that her grandparents ran a bar so it is “kind of continuing a family tradition for us.”

The bronze hand sculpture will be on display at Garcia’s. There is another one that is displayed at the Grateful Dead archive in Santa Cruz.

Shaprio and Trixie left the stage and Furthur played “Built to Last" for their encore.

Weir is reportedly fine after his collapse and played a sold out show in Atlantic City, NJ on Saturday, April 27.
