Port Chester's Coals Receives Another Warm Review from Food Critic

The Journal News’ Jeanne Muchnick is a fan of Coals’ crust, fresh toppings, craft beer, desserts and “low-key kitschy décor.”

Food critic Jeanne Muchnick gave Coals a thorough and glowing review this month, complimenting everything abut the less than two years old pizza spot located at 35 N. Main Street in Port Chester.

At Coals of Port Chester, every dish has been thoughtfully prepared. The dough, for example, is made with white flour, whole wheat flour and cornmeal, and placed over a gas grill, giving it a distinct taste that’s full of texture and char. The toppings — a crisp mix of well-paired, super-fresh ingredients — pay tribute to the art (and joy!) of true pizza-making.

Muchnick raves about the margherita pizza, “fresh mozzarella, tomato, pecorino and basil,” her personal favorite, and explains her husband enjoys being more adventurous, ordering pies like the “Smokey Joe,” or “Dean Martin.” She says they both agreed the Rustic would need to be on their “must-order” list during their most recent visit. She also mentions that burgers, starters like Buffalo wings and salads are on the one-page menu, but that the pizza is what is worth the visit. The one negative Muchnick wrote about is service that is consistent, which, she writes, depends on the time of day and crowd (as it does at most pizza spots). Read Muchnick's full review here

Other positives Muchnick notes are beer suggestions for each dish are noted on the menu and  that Capitol Theatre ticket holders get $1 off their meals.

The Journal News' positive review has not been Coals' first, last November The New York Times rated the restaurant as "Worth It" and raved about the food, feel and beer as well. Read that article here

Coals opened in spring of 2012, eight years after they opened their first location in the Bronx.
