Panel Discussion Looks At Business Opportunities For Women, Minorities

Business Council prepares minority-owned and women-owned businesses to take advantage of upcoming projects and special funding.

, a business advocacy and membership organization, is hosting a panel to discuss the resources and funding options available exclusively to minority-owned and women-owned businesses.

The Business Council of Westchester, in conjunction with the Rockland Economic Development Corporation and Community Capital Resources, want to make sure that every minority and women business owner in the region knows: 

  • Why and how to get certified as a minority- or women-owned business
  • How to best leverage your certification
  • Tips for responding to bid opportunities and finding those that don't go to bid 
  • The benefits of targeted marketing and proactive relationship building
  • How to access the special funding government and companies have put aside just for you

 “There are so many exciting projects happening here in Westchester and we want minority-owned and women-owned businesses to be able to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way,” said Dr. Marsha Gordon, president and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester. “With the Tappan Zee Bridge project alone there will be over $400 million of work that could be picked up by these business owners.”

More than 30 minority and women business owners are expected to attend the event. They will hear from several MWBE/MWOB certified business owners who have employed these successful tactics to grow their businesses. Panelists include:

  • Liz Kallen, program manager, Rockland Economic Development Corporation, Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)
  • Kim Jacobs, executive director, Community Capital Resources
  • Donna Proft, Minority-and-Women-Owned Business Liaison Officer, Westchester County
  • Stacy Simpson, Program Administrator, Supplier Diversity Program, ConEdison
  • Katie Delgado, COO, Crossfire Consulting

First, our property values are not as strong as our neighbors, so our homes have a higher levy in order to fund the schools. Second, and more important, is that the reliance on property taxes slams moderate income communities like PC. We need for the state to move to an income tax to fund schools. Scream at your legislators ... not the BoE.
