Crowds Flock to Furthur at The Cap and Concerts at The Copa

Deadheads packed the Cap for shows four through six of the sold out Furthur tour this weekend. Three more to go.

Furthur's "One More Saturday Night" kicked off the Grateful Dead band's fifth show at The Capitol Theatre last week and delighted the thousands of fans there to soak up the music on that chilly Saturday night.

All of the theater's 1,800 seats were filled with a mix of "deadheads," die-hard Dead fans from across the country, and Westchester and Connecticut residents who frequent shows at the Cap. Sixty-year-olds that remember the Dead's first shows at the Cap 40 years ago were back to see Dead natives Phil Lesh and Bob Weir on the same stage again, and 16-year-olds who were born after Jerry Garcia's death in 1995 were exposed to a similar experience their older counterparts have talked about for decades.

The band played many classics including "Hell in a Bucket," "Golden Road," "Reuben & Cherise," a Garcia cover, and "Morning Dew." See the full set list here.

They encored with a Chuck Berry cover, "Johnny B. Goode."

Outside the show, throngs of fans milled around Port Chester. They had tried to set up where fans typically gather to eat, drink and hang out before a show, in several locations throughout the week but had been repeatedly thrown out by officials.  Fans said they were first kicked out of the then thrown off the field by the river and the lot across from Buffalo Wild Wings. On Saturday night they landed on Broad Street between Westchester and Irving Avenues, which was blocked off by police for the fans.

"Now it is like literally 'Shakedown Street,'" said one fan who had been enjoying the grass by the river earlier. "It was nice because we could dance in the grass," she said. She spent the hour leading up to the show looking for a ticket.

Many others were walking through the crowds holding up one finger, the sign that indicates you are looking for a ticket.

No one had much luck since the show had been sold out since tickets were first released in February.

The last three shows of the run will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 23-25.

The Furthur shows have been letting out around midnight, but the party continues well into the early morning at the Copacabana down the street.  The Cap to the Copa after-party concerts have been a hit with fans. Furthur members have been joining the show almost every night. Read more here.
