For those of you who are looking for ways to help out in the recovery from Sandy, I wanted to share two opportunities.
First, the Red Cross is seeking volunteers to work in relief shelters. Typically, workers will work in 12-hour shifts and you can request day, night or weekend. In particular, they need help in NYC and Long Island (they can provide transportation) and may also have needs in Westchester or Fairfield County. You can register on the American Red Cross website or, for faster response, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The United Way is seeking volunteers to staff their 211-help line. These would be six-hour shifts. Their immediate need is in staffing the overages on the 211 line. If you are interested, call 914-993-3713 or email Shannon Cobb at email@example.com.
If you know of other local organizations who need volunteers to assist with the Sandy recovery, please post details in the comments.
