Jam Tonight with Port Chester's Community Band

Band directors hope to bring out latent musical talent in Port Chester's would-be musicians.

Whether you're a guitarist with well-honed chops or a pianist who hasn't struck a key in years, the Rye Town Community band wants you to jam.

With one rehearsal under its belt, the band will meet again tonight at Port Chester Middle School. Organizers are hoping to build on the core of about 20 musicians who showed up the first time around, and have made a point of welcoming musicians of all skill levels.

They're hoping word-of-mouth will help build interest in the band, which is co-sponsored by the Port Chester Council for the Arts. After the band's Jan. 19 practice, more musicians have reached out to get involved.

“Many more have emailed interest in coming to a future rehearsal” since the first meeting, said conductor Carolee Brakewood.

Showing off their skills that first practice in January, the members boasted a wide range of talent, brought together by grocery-store chatter and announcements around the village.

Everyone from seasoned music teachers to folks who may not have picked up their clarinets in years came together to play concert band tunes.

Port Chester Middle School band directors Ken Kraut and Linda McDermott, along with general music teacher at Park Avenue School Mark Zizolfo, were just a few of the the pros eager to lend their talents.

They hope locals will become inspired to keep the musical juices flowing long after graduation into adult life.

"Many of the town's constituents are products of the Port Chester school band program and the rich traditions it fostered during their youth,” Zizolfo said last month.

Although having active performers on board may seem a bit daunting, those who would like to come out this Wednesday should feel no pressure—all levels of skill are welcome.

The Rye Town Community Band will hold its next rehearsal this Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7pm in the Port Chester Middle School auditorium.
