The Great Escape: Take a Trip to A Local Brewery

From Peekskill to Brooklyn, knock back a cold beer while a tour guide shows you how it's made.

Cracking open a beer is pretty much always a pleasurable experience. Whether it’s to relax after a hard day at work or to wash down a hearty cheeseburger, beer is about as American as a baseball game.

However, there is more out there in the world of taste than just Samuel Adams, Bud Light and Coors.

Check out the tours and tastings offered at the following microbreweries. You’ll not only be able to glimpse and test out the different practices, flavors and processes that go into making some of the finest and little-known brands around, you’ll leave armed with enough knowledge to act as a beer connoisseur next time you’re at one of our local watering holes.

Peekskill Brewery Peekskill, NY

The food isn’t the only treat offered on-site here. The Paramount Pale Ale and Old Wagon are two beers offered all year round; a slew of specialty and seasonal suds are served on tap either at the beer or in the dining room. Taking a date to a restaurant that has good grub and something for you has never been so easy.

Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, NY

Walk-throughs are on the menu Saturdays from 12 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. every weekend at this newly-expanded joint. While you’re there, take a sip of the East India Pale Ale, the Brooklyn Pale Ale, and the ever-popular Brooklyn Lager. Since it’s sold at most Westchester bars, patrons may even discover their next favorite game-watching drink here.

Saranac Brewery Utica, NY

Since you will most likely find a 6-pack of this stuff in most gas stations and supermarkets, it’s definitely worth taking a trip upstate to see its back story firsthand. Not only is it one of the oldest breweries in New York, a swig of this is like drinking in the Adirondack Mountains. Soft drinks are available for the designated driver in the group.
