{UPDATE} Library Director Search Update Expected

New City Library Board hold regular monthly meeting following last week’s special meeting.

The New City Library Board of Trustees meets tonight on the status of the New Director Search Committee and to discuss naming a liaison to the Friends of the New City Library. Some of the issues included in last Wednesday’s special meeting may come up again.  Trustees approved Board President Tom Ninan’s attendance at library staff meetings and no decision was made on replacing or repairing the library’s non-working boiler.

The Friends of the New City Library is a not-for-profit organization that provides advocacy, increases public awareness and raises money for special library projects. Barry Warner, who was also a board member, revived it in 2011 however it is not currently active.

The New Director Search Committee chaired by Ninan narrowed the field of 20 applicants to two prospects. Ninan previously reported one candidate from New York had been interviewed and funds were requested to cover the cost of flying in the other candidate from Texas. The director’s position has been vacant since May 2012 and the interim director, who filled in for seven months, stepped down in late December to return to her regular job in the library.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The Board is working hard to find a candidate for director’s position for almost a year? This senseless drama must be ended. What a scene, Ninan (the ring leader) still looking to appoint candidates who will ‘wag their tales’ according to the master’s will. It is a SHAME that some other board members still stick on to his agendas. By allowing this to happen and continue, they are deviating from their legal responsibilities as Board Members of a NYS 503(c) (3) organization. What necessitated us to go to Texas or the farthest corners of NY to find some “hidden” candidates for a director’s position? What a shame! What about the business manager’s position? This vacancy is not caused by a sudden resignation. Rather the Board (means the one man show- Ninan) let the director go. In that case where is the PLANNING by this Board if they wanted the library to run normally? Hope the Board is trying to find best available candidates for the Director and Manager positions. Can the Search Committee (again a one man show of Ninan) bring to the Board at least 2 (3 or 4 is better) resumes for both positions? Best interest of the library is served if the Board vote on the candidates based on their TALLENTS (education and experience, experience with non-profit/library must be given weight, if available). Otherwise it is all about finding a candidate best suited for Ninan and Ninan only. I am wondering what happened to the library loving community? Folks please wake up!

We must act fast with this. The members and tax payers must know why the appointments are still pending. Why Ninan is so hesitant to hire someone? We must know if Ninan is playing a delay game. Ninan may be waiting to justify any hiring in a rush at the 11th hour to his benefit. Let Ninan bring all resumes to the table. Let the members screen the qualified candidates from the pool. If standard procedures are followed, the Board with the help of HR personnel normally interview and select the Director’s position. All other positions are to be filled by the Director and the HR. But this is New City Library, who knows what the next move from our Board is?

Good news for New City Library! The candidate for the director position is confirmed in the Board meeting yesterday. The director will join soon. Ninan was able to answer all his critics and the opposition was proven wrong on several matters yesterday. A director from RCLS also attended the meeting yesterday. The library is not in violation for the delay in appointing a director. Once the director joins the library, other vacant positions are expected to be filled without any delay.
