Jim Taylor, Goldie Solomon to Receive NAACP Honors

The Port Chester-Rye Brook NAACP will honor Taylor and Solomon, as well as other community leaders, at an October luncheon at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Slater Street.

Former school board president Jim Taylor and community activist Goldie Solomon are among several local people who will be feted at a NAACP luncheon next month.

Taylor was the Board of Education's first African American president and guided the board through some rocky times. Taylor's board kept most school services intact through a series of difficult budget years and conducted a pair of superintendent searches this year after the departure of former Superintendent Donald Carlisle.

Although the budget and superintendent choices did not come without controversy, as most school board decisions do, the district entered this school year with a new superintendent in place and met some of the public's demands in limiting tax increases.

Solomon is a familiar face -- and voice -- to almost everyone in Port Chester, from her permanent spot at government meetings, frequent and unrestrained criticism of elected leaders, and long-time activism on behalf of the community and local emergency services.

Fond of reminding politicians she "represents a lot of people," Solomon never hesitates to offer unfiltered thoughts about Port Chester, and she's a regular presence at community events, where she's usually dressed in patriotic regalia.

Among the other honorees are Clover DeGeneris, a community activist who has advocated and worked on behalf of Port Chester residents; and County Legislator Marty Rogowsky, who will retire at the end of this year, ending a 13-year career in the county's governing body.

The Port Chester-Rye NAACP will also honor the operators of the Boston Post Road KFC franchise, which has partnered with St. Frances AME Zion Church to feed local homeless.

The luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 29, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church on 23 Slater St. Tickets are $25, and in addition to being an honoree, Taylor will serve as the luncheon's keynote speaker.
