Independence Cup Soccer Tournament Begins Saturday

Port Chester will host international teams for the seventh year in a row. This year, teams from Peru and Colombia will square off against local squads in Colombus Park.

Local soccer fans will have the chance to catch live action in Port Chester this weekend during the annual Independence Cup Tournament.

With teams from countries like Peru and Colombia traveling to Port Chester to square off against local and area opponents, the tournament is expected to produce uptempo, finesse futbol in the South American style.

Last year, American soccer was represented in the tournament with teams from Port Chester, the greater New York area, and Massachusetts.

For the visiting players, it's also a chance to see New York City, often for the first time outside of a movie or TV show.

"It's become more of a social cultural event," Cesar Aliaga, the tournament's coordinator, said during last year's tournament.
