Health Department Issues Heat Advisory as Temperatures Rise

Movie theaters, malls and libraries are great places to cool off during sweltering afternoon hours.

As forecasts tell us to brace for the year's warmest day yet, local health authorities are urging people to stay out of the heat.

The Westchester County Health Department has issued a heat advisory, and weather forecasts predict today's temperatures could peak in the mid- to high-90s.

"As the temperature rises, residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids, and take precautions against suffering heat-related illness," reads a warning issued by the health department.

Remember: heat stroke can be fatal! If you believe someone may be suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person, by wrapping wet sheets around him or her. If you have ice packs or cold packs, wrap them in a cloth and place them on each of the victim's wrists and ankles, in the armpits and on the neck to cool the large blood vessels, the county advises.

Here is a list of cooling places in Westchester; most of them are free, including the senior center and the Port Chester Public Library.

The Carver Center also offer recreational swim hours today from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Visit the community center's website for more information.
