The School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Manhattanville College Announces Educational Partnership with Dominican Republic

Graduate School Welcomes New Students at Orientation

Purchase, NY – (September 24, 2013) – The School of Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) at Manhattanville College is proud to announce a new educational and business partnership with the Dominican Republic. 

At a recent orientation, thirty-eight graduate students from the Dominican Republic received a warm welcome from the college leadership including President Jon Strauss, Ph.D., Provost Gail Simmons, Ph.D., and Dr. Anthony Davidson, Dean of The School of Graduate and Professional Studies, as well as faculty members, and fellow graduate students. The student from the Dominican Republic will live and study on campus where they are enrolled in various Masters of Science programs, including Marketing Communication Management, Business Leadership, International Management, Finance, Human Resource Management & Organizational Effectiveness, and Sport Business Management.

Selected out of a pool of almost one hundred highly qualified applicants from the Dominican Republic, they will soon begin their studies on a full scholarship from Dominican Republic Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. Enrolled in curricula that are industry-driven with a highly applied focus, the students will acquire skills that are immediately applicable to the workplace, empowering them to return to the Dominican Republic with education specific to their jobs. In addition to classes, students will have access to Manhattanville’s Center for Career Development, and are encouraged to pursue internships in the Westchester and Fairfield business communities.  Dr. Davidson noted, “By investing in these students through internships, local businesses can broaden their international and cultural ties, creating a mutually beneficial relationship.”  With ties to the Dominican Republic government going back several years, Dr. Davidson was able to collaborate with the government’s education minister on this initiative and continue to assist the Dominican Republic on its pathways to the development of new businesses, new markets, and new educational opportunities. 

It is also important to note that the partnership with the Dominican Republic supports the overall mission of the college, which is to provide a ‘diverse, inclusive, and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community.  All of the graduate students at GPS, including those from the Dominican Republic gain a competitive advantage by learning from experts in senior positions at well-known national and global corporations. 

Students at the orientation displayed enthusiasm for the opportunity to further their education in the US and look forward to learning side by side with their fellow students from Westchester and the surrounding counties. Representative of the energy and buzz at the event, a Dominican Republic student Charlene Santana said, “I am excited to learn from leaders in my field of study in a small classroom setting where I can get one-on-one interaction with my teacher. I look forward to taking back the knowledge I gain to the Dominican Republic.”
