On Thursday, January, 17th and Friday, January 18th, Park Avenue Elementary School in Port Chester, NY celebrated its second annual Beach Days. Students were greeted with colorful, beach-themed decorations in the gym and were encouraged to wear bright colors and sunglasses to school. During their Physical Activity periods, students played summer-time favorites such as volleyball, horseshoes, bean-bag toss, jump-rope, hula-hoop and even badminton and bochi ball. The event was organized in cooperation between the schools Wellness Committee lead by nurse Geri Cusumano and the Physical Education Teacher, Coach John Cafaldo. The Wellness Committee plans several health-related events at the school including Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, cleverly scheduled near Valentines Day in February. The event was facilitated by parent volunteers from Park Avenue and HealthCorps Navigators from the schools community partner, Open Door Family Medical Centers.
