That Discount Place: Turning Grocery Shopping Into 'A Treasure Hunt'

Ten bags of groceries for eighty bucks? It's not too good to be true, proprietor Jane Stout says.

Dented cans. Ripped labels. Six-packs that have become five-packs.

That's the kind of thing shoppers will find at That Discount Place, an eclectic grocery store in the heart of Port Chester. The appeal, owner Jane Stout says, is two-fold: Saving money and having a little fun.

"It's a different way to shop. I won't always have the same item in week-to-week," Stout said. "It's kind of like a mini treasure hunt. And that's part of the charm of it."

Stout knows the discount grocery business first-hand, doing everything from inventory to bagging and driving delivery trucks when her parents opened up their first shop in Indiana in the late 1970s.

Her parents opened a second store, then a third. As loyal customers formed daily lines, Stout knew she could replicate that success with her own discount grocery shop.

That Discount Place opened on Oct. 29 in Port Chester, but on Thursday the store will celebrate its "official" opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Local leaders are expected to attend, and Mayor Dennis Pilla will be on hand to help cut the ribbon.

Customers save anywhere between 30 and 60 percent on items in That Discount Place, and Stout says it's not uncommon for shoppers to leave the store with 10 bags full of groceries for around $80.

When customers realize they're getting twice as much for their cash, they become regulars.

"Everybody's looking to save money," Stout said, "and that's what they're going to do at my establishment."

That Discount Place is located at 155 Irving Ave. in Port Chester, with the entrance and parking lot on the Pearl Street side. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. The store will run specials after the grand opening, including 5 percent off total bills until Feb. 12.

I love this place. Wall to wall bargains, and different specials each time I visit. Very nice employees. This is the place to shop.

Coupons may offer discounts, but they're also a form of advertising for companies. Whether you clip coupons from the Sunday circulars or print them from Printapons, you'll see ads for hundreds of products in the process

I recently wrote a letter to the Westmore News regardingThat Discount Place. I highly recommend everyone to go and check it out. There's everything to gain and nothing to lose in doing so. In these troubled times, everyone can use some help saving money. Give it a try. By the way,Tuesday is Seniors day with a 10% discount.
