Port Chester Man Faces Charges, ICE Detainer After Fleeing Crash

Greenwich police say Jose R. Flores doesn't have a driver's license and is living in the country illegally. Flores is accused of fleeing a crash scene after his car landed on the banks of the Byram River.

A 24-year-old Port Chester man was driving without a license when his BMW collided with another car last week, according to Greenwich police.

Jose R. Flores was arrested Thursday after the crash, in which his car landed on a Byram River bank short of the water. Flores is accused of taking off after the collision, and now faces a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray, Flores, of 38 Madison Ave., was charged with evading responsibility and operating without a license in connection with the crash, reported about 2:30 a.m. Bond was set at $500, but the ICE detainer order means Flores will remain in jail even if he posts bail.

Police were continuing their investigation Thursday afternoon into what precipitated the incident in which Flores and a second driver crashed their vehicles on Halstead Avenue and Caroline Place, Gray said.

There apparently was contact between the 1994 BMW Flores was driving and a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Charlene Batista, 20, of 9 French St., Yonkers, NY. Batista was ticketed for following too close, Gray said.

The Toyota crashed into a stone wall in front of 129 Halstead Ave. The BMW continued through the intersection of Caroline Place, clipped a tree, hit a large stone outdoor fireplace of 1 Caroline Pl., before coming to rest on the banks of the Byram River.

Gray said Flores fled the scene. Details on how Flores was apprehended were not immediately available. He was scheduled to appear July 28 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
