Port Chester Company Builds $17M Solar Plant

Solar Systems Inc. of Port Chester partnered with a New Jersey-based clean energy company to build the $17 million plant.

A Port Chester-based solar power company touted a milestone this week, announcing the completion of its biggest solar power plant yet.

Mercury Solar Systems Inc. of Port Chester partnered with NJR Clean Energy Ventures to build the massive, $17 million solar plant in Manalapan, NJ.

Stretching out over a New Jersey field, the solar plant features 12,000 photovoltaic modules, according to a SolarServer report. Photovoltaic modules are arrays of solar panels that collect solar radiation and convert it to electric current.

The new plant produces 3.6 megawatts. That's enough energy to power about 450 homes a year, according to the company.

By comparison, Indian Point produces more than 2,000 megawatts. Indian Point was constructed in the mid-1970s at a cost of about $2.5 billion, according to adjusted figures, and supplies about 25 percent of New York City's power.

In terms of environmental impact, the new solar plant in New Jersey "will eliminate an estimated 3,100 metric tons of carbon equivalent emissions from the atmosphere each year or the equivalent of removing the carbon dioxide emissions produced by approximately 609 cars," the company said.

“This ground mount is the largest system we have designed and installed to date and underscores the continued strength of the utility-scale solar market in New Jersey,” Mercury CEO Frank Alfano said in a statement.
