PCPD Uses DEA Funds to Switch Cell Carriers

Port Chester police will use DEA funds from drug investigations to pay for new cell phones and coverage plans for investigators.

Port Chester's detectives and supervisors will get new cell phones for free, thanks to a program that allows police departments to use to pay for equipment.

Detectives and some shift supervisors previously used Nextel phones. They experienced dead spots in Port Chester with that carrier, Chief Joseph Krzeminski said. The department also ran into other problems with its cellular service: officers in the field couldn't open PDF files on their smartphones, and text messages and e-mails were often delayed due to network hiccups.

Last week, Port Chester's Board of Trustees passed a resolution allowing the department to use DEA funds for nine new cell phones, which will be used by detectives, the traffic bureau supervisor, the patrol captain and the police chief. Police will use Verizon as their new service provider.
